We encourage you to remember that:
- OSA members are supporting critical processes inside dealerships, where data exchange is needed. Secure data access plays an important role in many business relationships.
- Many third parties are 100% committed to secure access, use and storage of dealership data. Participation in DMS-sanctioned programs, if available at all, is not yet proven to be any more secure than other security standards and programs.
In some cases, DMS-certified programs provide an alternative to programs initiated by the dealer or third party. OSA’s principles support the development and use of these programs. Three important characteristics will drive their future growth: They must be 1) Able to meet data transfer needs (as examples, every hour, or bi-directional), 2) Available to third parties requesting participation, and 3) Affordable, in terms of upfront costs, attached conditions, recurring charges and resources required to complete the certification. It is worth understanding these programs and their associated costs and limitations, because program attributes are likely to impact directly data access by third parties.
Independent, broader-based, collaborative initiatives are most likely to produce security and access solutions that meet the market’s needs. OSA’s Certification Programs were based on an industry-wide effort that took into account best practices from other markets, too.
What can you do?
- Become aware of the current and proposed data access challenges. Talk with the IT team inside the dealership.
- Speak with your third party software providers to understand their needs, data movement options available to support your partnership, and their commitment to securing data.
- Share your expectations and concerns with your systems and services providers. Be certain that they support your agenda and your need to work with other parties.
- Join OSA. Dealer membership is free.
